Stress and Anxiety

If you are frequently feeling a sense of overwhelm, that the demands of one or more aspects of your life are more than you can cope with or have a feeling of being under pressure and fearing you will fail, you may be suffering from stress.  You can feel stressed by external situations (too much work, family demands etc.) and by internal triggers (the way you think about external situations).  When these stressful levels get too high, anxiety can occur. The effects of stress and anxiety on our body are numerous and unfortunately in our modern lives it is becoming more and more frequent to see how the stress and fear we experience produces many symptoms of anxiety that become debilitating.

The symptoms of stress and anxiety may affect you in many ways including :

  • emotionally - depression, tension, anger, mood swings
  • mentally - poor concentration, forgetfulness, apathy, hopelessness
  • behaviourally - addictive behaviours, insomnia, loss or increase of appetite, obsessive-compulsive behaviour, nervousness
  • physically - blood pressure, heart palpitations, headaches, allergies, infections, chronic fatigue, illness and diseases.

Hypnotherapy and EFT can help you combat stress and anxiety in a number of ways:

  • calming techniques
  • identifying the triggers
  • learning to control your reaction
  • identifying and utilising your own resources
  • overcoming the initial cause of the stress
  • learning to prepare and therefore prevent stressful situations
  • improving your outlook
  • address limiting beliefs and patterns
  • help support you in taking care of yourself physically and emotionally
  • setting and achieving goals

When you learn to handle and control stress and anxiety in most cases all the symptoms begin to disappear too.  And if they don't we can work on those separately.

You don't need to go through life feeling out of control!

Stress is something we need to have and has kept the human race alive.  It helps us to know that something is wrong.  But I can help you learn to live with a normal, healthy amount of stress that takes you from feeling stressed and anxious to feeling calm and confident and in control. In addition to undertaking a tailor-made course of hypnotherapy, together we will establish different techniques that work best for you so that you can take them away and use them at home to maintain a calm, in-control state wherever you are.   EFT is particularly helpful and successful as a self-help tool and hypnotherapy is a gentle, soothing and very relaxing method of helping even the most stressed people feel calmer and in control.

Working with stressed and anxious clients is very rewarding and satisfying because I often see the biggest changes and best results.

The Stress Test

Here are a few questions that might start you thinking about how you deal with stress!

How do you feel when you're in the 8 items or less express lane at the supermarket and you notice someone ahead of you has over 12 items in their basket?

Do you know exactly what triggers stress in your life?

Is the amount of stress you experience in a difficult situation is influenced by your thoughts and feelings or your behaviour?

Do you ever prepare yourself for stressful situations in advance by rehearsing how you will handle them?

Do you make time in your average day for some exercise and fun or quiet 'you time'?

In the event of conflict do you internalise your feelings, fly into a rage or avoid it at all costs?

When things go wrong are you easily able to find a positive twist?

Imagine for a second a stressful event such as a moment of road rage or unexpected confrontation.... now feel where do you hold that in your body?

Now close your eyes and take a big, long deep breath.... all the way in and really fill up your lungs.  Take as long to exhale as you did to breathe in.  And do that again at least once more, perhaps twice.

As you do this begin to imagine you have a pendulum hanging about 30cm in front of your face and with your breath beginning to steady into a nice, rhythmic pace you feel the pendulum starting to move back and forth into a steady motion.

And as your breathing settles,  the pendulum gains its own momentum and as your gentle and steady breathing continues, the pendulum gently swings back and forth, back and forth...  now continue this for a couple of minutes and then take one more really big, deep breath and let go and feel so much better...
